Work with Immigrant Youth: Obtaining the Predicate Order for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status

Attorneys from Memphis-based Community Legal Center and Nashville-based TN Justice for Our Neighbors will discuss Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) status, a path to lawful permanent residence (a/k/a green card) for children living in the United States who meet certain requirements including abuse, abandonment or neglect by a parent. The SIJ application process requires a predicate order from a state court, typically the Juvenile Court or Probate Court, as well as an application to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The general education portion of this course will focus on the basics of applying for the required predicate order in a Tennessee state court. The ethics portion of this course will focus on best practices in representing proposed guardians of immigrant children in Tennessee state courts. This course has been approved by the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education for a maximum of 2.5 hours of credit (1.5 general and 1 dual). Cost to attend the training is $25 and can be paid via online contribution.
