Leveraging the National JFON network for powerful advocacy

Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors exists in a complex world, where economic, cultural, legal, and security interests create both opportunities and barriers for immigrants attempting to access legal assistance. The political climate of a particular state can have a life-changing impact on the ability of the national JFON network to help others. Each JFON affiliate participates in a variety of advocacy efforts, accounting for political context that may impact the success of their work. TNJFON is grateful to be part of such an innovative, inspiring group of people that go above and beyond to work within their means to generate advancements towards a more equitable and safe world for our immigrant neighbors. 

While much debate around immigration focuses on federal action, state and local governments play an important role in what resources are available for immigrants in the United States. TNJFON participates in regular network advocacy meetings to connect with our JFON counterparts in other states and share updates on site, local, and state advocacy efforts. Central Washington Justice for our Neighbors is providing application assistance for the Washington Immigrant Relief fund, designed to support state residents who did not receive stimulus funds or unemployment due to their immigration status. On the East coast, Reverend Paul Fleck of New York Justice for Our Neighbors (NYJFON) touched on his team’s efforts with the Access to Representation Act. They are attempting to establish a right to counsel for those in immigration court and proceedings, which would make New York the first state to do so. Working with the New York Immigration Coalition, there is momentum to potentially pass the act this current session. Kristin Bowdre, Executive Director of Justice for Our Neighbors El Paso, talked about JFON El Paso’s efforts in shutting down ICE detention centers in the state of New Mexico. Other efforts saw Justice for Our Neighbors Michigan following up with clients who have become U.S. citizens since the last presidential election, sharing resources on registering to vote and voting and encouraging them to make their voice heard at the polls. 

It is clear that each JFON affiliate must tackle different initiatives in order to best serve immigrant communities in their respective state. Accounting for differing political climates across the United States, JFON affiliates must identify levers of change and opportunities for action that are practical. In collaboration with TNJFON’s partners, we can learn about new pathways for change and celebrate the dedication of our fellow Justice for Our Neighbors allies.

Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors is best known for our compassionate, high-quality immigration legal services.  However, educating the community about immigration matters and advocating for immigrant rights is also part of our mission.  There are partners in Nashville who we collaborate with and we are thrilled to have hired Hannah Smalley, our Education and Advocacy Coordinator to help us work more intentionally in our advocacy efforts.
